Truman Brings Home 73 Awards, Chrisman 53 at J-Day
William Chrisman and Truman journalism students hauled home more than 120 awards during the 46th annual Missouri Interscholastic Press Association’s Journalism Day (J-Day) at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Truman’s journalism and broadcast students walked away with 73 awards, Chrisman won 53- including eight All-Missouri awards, the top award given. Truman also brought home eight All-Missouri awards.
“The students really worked hard this year,” said Robyn King, Truman’s media adviser. “They truly deserve the recognition.” King said her media students will be on KCWJ, AM 1030 Monday, April 13 (8 a.m.) to talk about their awards.
Students showcased their work in a variety of journalistic disciplines including broadcast, yearbook, photography, newspaper, online and social media. While in Columbia, the young journalists also attended several seminars and toured the University of Missouri campus.
“I was able to see the entire campus,” said Sonny Erstad, Truman senior. “It’s so big, yet still had that small town feel. The people are amazing and there’s so much you can do.”
“It was certainly a day of learning and obviously, one of the most successful in the past decade in terms of awards won,” said Jason Stacy, Chrisman’s yearbook, newspaper and photojournalism adviser.
Awards were given in the following categories: All-Missouri, Superior, Excellent and Honorable Mention. The eight Chrisman All-Missouri winners were:
In photography, sophomore Bre Poston picked up All-Missouri awards in both Sports Action and Sports Feature photography. Senior Katie Ross also earned All-Missouri in Sports Feature.
In yearbook, the yearbook staff, led by Katie Ross and Jordyn Herl, brought home an All-Missouri honor for Overall Theme and Concept for the 2015 yearbook. Senior Emily Park earned two All-Missouri honors in Student Life Reporting/Writing.
In broadcasting, Samantha Hutchinson and Dwain Henson worked together to bring home an All-Missouri award in News Story-Short.
In online news site, junior Eli Henderson earned an All-Missouri award in Sports Writing.
Both Truman and William Chrisman have a long history of statewide journalistic excellence. “In the 40-plus years of the event, Chrisman has won numerous awards including several for Student Journalist and Journalism Teacher of the Year,” Stacy said.
More than 1,000 Missouri high school journalism students participated in the day-long event.
