Truman victorious as team and community celebrate first true homecoming
Truman High School played the first on-campus football game in the history of the school, 50 years, on Friday, October 2nd, 2015. The Patriots beat the Marshall Owls 62-21 in front of an estimated crowd of 3500 students, staff, alumni and community members.
ISD Superintendent Dr. Dale Herl says it was special to see so many people unite for the game, “I recognize how important this stadium is to our community. It is incredible to see so many people here to celebrate together. This game is about much more than football. This has been a chance to recognize the history of the school and to celebrate all of the exciting things still to come.”
Leroy Brown, the first Truman principal from 1964-1965, flipped the coin for the game. Brown was principal for 27 years and says being at the game with 17 family members was emotional, “I was prideful then and I’m still proud of it. Seven of my nine grandchildren graduated from here. All four of my own kids graduated from here. I’ve got some investment here.”
The additional seating is the first phase of the stadium upgrades at Truman. There are future plans to add concessions, a new press box, a locker room and even more seating. That will allow all games to be played at Truman down the road.
