For nearly six straight hours, Procter Elementary School Principal Amy Hawley read, and read, and read! She read more than 20 books to her students during the Principal Challenge, part of National Young Readers Week.

Sitting in the school’s front lobby, Hawley read to students from every Procter classroom. National Young Readers Week and the Principal Challenge is part of the BOOK IT! program sponsored by Pizza Hut to raise awareness about the importance of reading.

“This an excellent cause,” Hawley said. “I read my heart out, modeling reading fluency and a love for reading.”

Hawley read The Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalk to one of her fourth-grade classrooms. Hearing the story about Duncan and his very verbose crayons kept the students engaged and entertained. See the video here.

National Young Readers Week, observed November 9-13, opens students minds to creativity and helps expand their general knowledge.
