ISD Buys Former YMCA, Repurposing Building for District Use

After sitting empty for several years, the ISD has purchased the old YMCA building, just off Noland Rd. near Truman High School, with plans to turn the currently blighted facility into the district’s facilities and nutrition services central warehouse. ISD Superintendent Dr. Dale Herl said repurposing the building will benefit Independence and the neighborhoods surrounding Truman High School.

“This was an important move for the district,” Herl said. “Purchasing and remodeling the old YMCA and moving facilities and nutrition services there gives the ISD a more centralized distribution point, decreasing food service costs and saving taxpayer money.” Currently, the district leases space for nutrition services on West Geo Space Drive, better known as ‘the caves.’ The purchase also allows for additional parking for Truman’s new football stadium.

As part of the purchase agreement, the seller was responsible for gutting the building and repairs are already underway. Herl said buying the old YMCA ultimately benefits the city of Independence and all ISD patrons. “We wanted to be ensure the building and land would continue to be used in a positive manner for our community,” he said.
