Posted April 8, 2016

Van Horn High School senior Destany Williamson was named the JROTC Outstanding Cadet by the Missouri Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), the third time in the last six years the statewide award was won by a Van Horn cadet. Williamson will be recognized April 30 during the SAR’s annual state conference in Independence.

“Destany was selected for her high degree of merit with respect to leadership qualities, military bearing and general excellence,” said retired Lt. Col. Michael Byrd, Van Horn’s senior JROTC instructor. “I am very proud of her.” Williamson will receive the SAR Silver Medal, $500 and be eligible for the national JROTC Outstanding Cadet award.

Nominees are selected by the Commanding Officer of the JROTC unit and a state level committee of SAR members review all applications and evaluates each cadet and their work to determine the statewide recipient.  The SAR Medal is approved for wear on the cadet uniform by the United States Army, the United States Navy, the United States Marine Corps and the United States Air Force.
