First Day of School in the ISD

Posted August 17, 2020

The 2020-2021 school year begins on August 24th in the Independence School District. You can find important information about the first day of school for in-person and virtual learners below.

In-Person Learning

When we return to school on August 24, students who opted for in-person learning when registering for the regular school year will return under our Hybrid Plan (Plan B).

Elementary

Elementary students will continue regularly scheduled in-person learning. With more than 25% of elementary students selecting ISD Virtual Learning, social distancing can be maintained without the need to modify elementary school in-person schedules under the Hybrid Plan. Find our health and safety precautions here.

Middle School

Under the Hybrid Plan, middle school students will alternate weeks of on-site and virtual instruction to reduce school capacity. Students will receive virtual instruction during the weeks they are not on-site. Groups are determined by the first letter of a student’s last name.

Group A: Last names beginning with A-K

Group A will attend school in-person at their middle school building during the first week of school (August 24-28), following the Middle School Bell Schedule.

Group A will transition to virtual learning through Canvas during the second week of school (August 31 – September 4). Students will be expected to complete the Canvas coursework for the classes they are scheduled to attend during that week. Instructions for accessing Canvas can be found here.

Students will continue alternating this schedule each week until further notice.

Group B: Last names beginning with L-Z

Group B will attend school virtually through Canvas during the first week of school (August 24-28). Students will be expected to complete the Canvas coursework for the classes they are scheduled to attend during that week, following the Middle School Bell Schedule. Instructions for accessing Canvas can be found here.
