Posted August 20, 2024

Independence, MO – August 15, 2024 – The Independence School District ushered in the new school year by welcoming back district employees at the 2024 Convocation ceremony. More than 2,500 educators, administrators, and support staff came together to kick off the start of the school year.

Facilities Lead Groundsman Jason Whitaker was named this year’s Starfish Award winner. Jason graduated from Warrensburg High School and started working in the ISD in 2008. His strong work ethic, reliability, and effective communication make him an asset to the ISD team. Congratulations, Jason!

Thank you ISD staff, for all that you do for our students. We are #BetterTogether!

Starfish Award background:
An old man sees a younger man throwing beached starfish into the ocean. The man asks why he is doing this. The younger man replies. “If the starfish are left on the beach, they will die.” The older man says, “But there are thousands of miles of beach, and millions of starfish. What you are doing couldn’t make much difference.” As he throws another starfish into the ocean, the younger man replies, “But it makes a difference to this one.”

Have a great 2024-25 school year!
