ISD high school students had strong showings during the district Solo and Small Ensemble Vocal Music Contest and the district Solo and Small Ensemble Instrumental Music Contest. Several William Chrisman, Truman and Van Horn students earned (I) Exemplary ratings and qualified for the state contest in Columbia in April.

It was a record-setting singing performance for the Patriots, sending 28 vocalists (63 students total) to state. “I do believe I’m safe in saying the number of students advancing to state is one of the highest in the Kansas City metro district and one of the highest numbers posted by Truman High School in recent history,” said Kim Carson, Truman’s director of vocal music. “We (Truman’s vocal music teachers) could not be more proud of these kids and their fine work dating all the way back to the beginning of the year.” Chrisman’s vocal results included nine (I) Exemplary ratings, 11 (II) Outstanding ratings and five (III) Satisfactory ratings.

In instrumental music, Chrisman’s instrumental music results included six (I) Exemplary ratings, 14 (II) Outstanding ratings and seven (III) Satisfactory ratings. Truman had nine (I) ratings and Van Horn notched eight (I) ratings. “Our students are so proud of their performance and rightly so,” said Allison Ross, Van Horn orchestra director. “It always means a lot for students ‘in the arts’ to be recognized.”
