ISD Summer Arts Program Fosters Student Talent

More than 70 talented writers, musicians, artists and performers from the Independence School District and nearby districts sharpen their skills at the George Caleb Bingham Academy of the Arts five-week summer program. For 23 years, GCB Academy of the Arts has allowed students to focus on creative writing, music, theatre or visual art for four hours daily plus extended hours for field trips, including theatre performances.

Forty-eight students from Truman, Van Horn and William Chrisman are attending this summer’s program, themed “Then and Now.” Some students choose to perfect their passion for an area of the arts while others use the program as an opportunity to pick up a new craft. A semester’s fine arts credit is awarded to all students, and some are eligible for dual credit through MCC-Blue River.

Experience the hard work of these talented students, including art displays, creative writing pieces and performances in dance, theatre and music at the Showcase of the Arts. The event is free and open to the public.
