Visiting & Volunteering in the ISD
Thank you for your interest in volunteering in our schools. We appreciate your support in serving the students and families of the Independence School District. This page explains the differences between visitors and types of volunteers, as well as outlines the process for those interested in serving. Visitors
VISITORS: a parent, relative, or guardian who visits a school for a public or private event involving a student who is the individual’s child, close relative, or for whom the individual is the guardian; also includes other individuals who are under the supervision of a school employee. Requires completion of Raptor Screening at student’s school.
Examples of visitor activities: visit a student at the building for lunch, assembly, or other activity that does not include the visitor supervising other students.
Supervised Volunteers
SUPERVISED VOLUNTEERS: may participate in activities and field trips with the teacher present. Requires completion of Raptor Screening and Confidentiality Agreement only.
Examples of supervised volunteer activities: some field trips, class activities with a teacher present; unpaid classroom assistants working in the presence of district staff; playground, library, or cafeteria assistants; one-day event chaperones; door greeters.
Screened Volunteers
SCREENED VOLUNTEERS: any individual serving in an unpaid position who may be periodically left alone with students. Requires completion of Raptor Screening and Volunteer Packet at student’s school, as well as additional screening requirements as detailed in RSMo 168.133 including: a criminal background check including the submission of fingerprints, and screening through the Family Care Safety Registry.
Examples of screened volunteer activities: some field trips, study trip, or overnight event chaperone; sponsor or assist with extracurricular club.
Screened Volunteers Requirements
Once all five steps below are completed and ISD Human Resources receives all of your screening results, the Building Secretary at your student’s school will notify you of your results. Please see instructions below.
— Please complete steps 1-3 with the Secretary at your school.
Step (1) Raptor
Step (2) Confidentiality Agreement
Step (3) ISD Volunteer Background Check Request Form
Steps (4) and (5) are completed on your time
Step (4) Background Check with Fingerprints (Missouri State Highway Patrol)
Complete the registration online (click here).
— The fingerprint fee is $44.75.
— The “4 digit Registration Number” for the ISD is 8468.
— When asked “Is this search being conducted for a position as a volunteer?” select “Yes.”
— Once registered, you will see a list of fingerprint location sites. Once you complete that process, the ISD will receive the results with 48 hours.
Step (5) Family Care Safety Registry (Missouri Dept. of Health and Human Services)
Complete registration online or print the form (https://health.mo.gov/safety/fcsr/pdf/WorkerRegistration.pdf) and mail it along with a copy of your Social Security card and payment to “Missouri Dept. of Health and Senior Services, Fee Receipts, P.O. Box 570, Jefferson City, MO 65102.”
— There is a one-time registration fee of $15.00.
— In the first box titled Registration Type, select “Voluntary.”
— It takes the state about a week to complete this process. Once you receive your results via email or mail, please submit them to the Building Secretary at your student’s school.
